National Monument or Monumen Nasional or Monas as it is widely known, is a 132-metre tower in the centre of Merdeka Square, Central Jakarta. Opened in 1975 to commemorate the struggle for Indonesian independence, Monas houses the National History Museum History and Hall of Independence. The obelisk itself is clad in Italian marble topped by a flame covered in gold foil, and features a 115-metre high observation deck boasting stunning panoramic views of the city.
